아베 총리 !

최근 총련(재일본조선인총연합회) 의장과 부의장 자택을 일본 경찰이 합법적 절차 없이 침입하여 강제 수색한 소식은 미주 동포들에게 너무나 큰 충격과 분노를 자아냈다. 총련 최고 임원들의 인권 유린은 코리아반도의 평화와 통일, 그리고 미주동포들의 권익보호를 목표로 하고 있는 재미동포전국연합회(KANCC)뿐만 아니라 진보적 애국 미주동포들을 분노케하였다.

아베 총리 !

총련은 북과 일본 사이에 정상외교관계가 없는 상황에서 두 나라의 중재 역할을 실질적으로 하고 있다. 그러므로 코리아 반도의 긴장이 고조되어 있는 시기에 일본 당국의 강제수색은 동북아 지역 관계를 더욱더 악화시키고 있다. 또한 총련은 2차대전 당시 일본에 의하여 강제로 일본으로 이주한 조선인들과 그들의 자녀들을 대변하고 보호하는 유일한 단체라는 것을 총리는 알아야 한다. 총련은 일본에서 생존투쟁과 민족 차별정책 철폐를 위한 정의로운 투쟁을 이어온 동포들의 삶이 담겨져 있는 역사를 가지고 있다. 일본당국이 저지른 강제수색으로 인해 민족차별정책이 더욱 악화되고 있으며 우리 민족에 대해 감출 수 없는 적대적 인권유린을 적나라하게 보여주고 있다.

아베 총리 !

일본 당국이 자행한 불법가택 수사는 동북아시아 특히 북일간의 길고도 암울한 그림자를 던질 것이라는 것을 전후 세대인 총리는 분명히 알아야 한다. 북과 남, 중국 등 동북아시아 국가 국민들은 일본이 자행한 극악하고 잔인한 식민통치에 대한 진심어린 사과와 반성이 없었다는 것을 잊지 않고 있다.

일본전범이 합사된 야스쿠니 사원을 참배한 총리의 부적절한 행위. 일본군 위안부 여성들에 대한 일본 당국의 책임 부인, 그리고 일제강점기 당시 마지막 총독이었던 총리의 조부 아베 노부유키가 패전 후 조선을 떠날 때 반성하지 않고 일본과 자신이 다시 식민지의 주인으로서 돌아올 것이라고 다짐했던 말을 동북아시아 국민들은 기억하고 있다.

이 불행한 상황을 우려하는 진보적 미주 코리안들과 함께 재미동포전국연합회는 총리가 직접 불법가택수사에 대한 사과와 더불어 재발 방지 방안을 마련하고 총련과 우리 동포들에게 진심으로 사과할 것을 촉구한다. 동시에 일본 당국이 저지른 불법행위에 대해 재미동포사회와 언론을 포함한 미국주류사회, 그리고 미국 정부에 정확하게 알릴 것을 촉구한다.

An Open Letter to Mr. Abe Shinzo

Prime Minister

Dear Mr. Abe, recent public news that the private residences of the president as well as the vice-president of Chosen Sohren (General Association of Korean Residents in Japan) were entered by the Japanese Police and were ransacked thoroughly without any proper legal advance notice had been received with great shock and anger by the Korean American community. This violation of the legitimate ownership right as well as the basic human right of the highest officials of the organization Chosen Sohren, saddens especially the members of the progressive Korean American community, represented by the organization called Korean American National Coordinating Council (KANCC), whose stated objectives are the peace and reunifications of the Korean peninsula and the protection of the rights of the overseas Koreans.

Dear Mr. Abe, as you are aware, Chosohren, often performs the role of liaison between Japan and North Korea in the absence of normalized diplomatic relation between the two countries, therefore this kinds of meaningless illegal action committed by your government, needlessly strains the international relationship, especially currently, when the tension in the peninsula is all time high. Additionally, you must know that Sohren is the only significant entity that represents and protects the Korean residents of Japan, the majority of whom are the Koreans and their descendants forcibly moved to Japan by the Japanese imperial government during the world war II. Therefore, this kind of action by your government symbolizes their life in Japan as well as a reflection of their history, marked by struggle for their survival and justice in the face of harsh discriminations against them by the society of Japan. In other words, it represents further worsening of the existing practice of ethnic discrimination against Korean residents of Japan; a thinly veiled human rights violation!

Dear Mr. Abe, in cognizance of the fact that you are a member of a postwar generation, you should be reminded of the fact that this kind of actions by your government will cast a long and dark shadow on the international relationship in the Northeast Asia; the people in the countries of Korean peninsula, China and others, whose memories of the harsh and merciless colonial rule by Japan had never been properly reconciled. This unfortunate action will be remembered by the people in the area along with your inappropriate visit to Yasukuni shrine, your refusal to admit the responsibility for the “Comfort Women” issue; and finally, the statement made by your grandfather Mr. Abe Nobuyuki, the last colonial ruler of Korea, upon his forced departure from Korea at the end of the war, in which he pledged unrepentantly, the return of Japan and himself to Korea again as a colonial master!

Dear Mr. Abe, KANCC, representing the progressive and concerned Korean Americans, urges you to take actions to prevent the future recurrence of events of this nature, and to offer apologies to the Chosen Sohren for the episode.

In the meantime, this illegal action by your government will be disseminated widely among Korean American community as well as the mainstream American society including its news media, the three branches of its government and general public.
