민족통신 취재진들은 24일 오후 미국인 평화시위장에서 취재활동을 전개하는 동안 여러명의 미국인 시위대원들과 만나 미국정부의 시리아 공격사태에 대해 질문하면서 미국 대통령과 함께 미행정부 관리들이 국내외에서 자신들이 인권국가라고 주장하는데 이에 대한 의견을 물은 결과 답변하는 미국인들은이구동성으로 “미국정부는 인권이나 민주주의를 논할 자격도 전혀 없을 뿐만 아니라 인권을 유린하는 주모자”라고 규정했다. 시위현장에서 취재하며 대담한 내용들을 간추려 여기에 소개한다.[민족통신 편집실]

[미주]”미국정부 인권논할 자격 전혀없다”

[로스엔젤레스=노길남/손세영 민족통신 공동취재] 민족통신 취재진들은 24일 오후 미국인 평화시위장에서 취재활동을 전개하는 동안 여러명의 미국인 시위대원들과 만나 미국정부의 시리아 공격사태에 대해 질문하면서 미국 대통령과 함께 미행정부 관리들이 국내외에서 자신들이 민주주의 국가, 인권국가라고 주장하는데 이에 대한 의견을 물은 결과 답변하는 미국인들은 이구동성으로 “미국정부는 민주주의, 인권을 논할 자격도 전혀 없을 뿐만 아니라 인권을 유린하는 주모자”라고 규정했다.

전쟁을 반대하고 평화를 사랑하는 미국인들은 24일 오후6시부터 한시간 반동안 로스엔젤레스 근교 웨스트우드에 위치한 연방정부 건물 앞에서 “미국은 시리아 공격을 중단하라!”고 외치며 거리시위를 벌였다.

미 공군이 이틀째 시리아 지역에 공습을 펼치면서 이른바 테러조직단 ISIS(이슬람 국가단체)가 있고 이들이 미국인과 프랑스인들을 참수한다는 명복으로 시리아의 허락도 없이 국제법을 어기면서 폭력행사를 자행하고 있어 전세계 평화를 애호하는 민중들로부터 규탄의 화살을 받고 있다.

-벤 허프(Ben Huff)씨는 미당국이 시리아를 공습하는 것은 엄밀히말해 국제법을 위반하면서 주권국인 시리아를 불법적으로 파괴하는 행위를 자행한다고 지적하면서 “미국은 전쟁범죄자이며 허위구실을 붙여 중동의 주권국들을 마주잡이로 침략하고 공격하는 조폭집단과 같은 행위를 해 왔다”고 비판했다. 그는 이어 미국은 이스라엘에 수십억 달러의 원조금을 지원하면서 팔레스타인을 포함하여 미국을 반대하는 나라들을 무자비하게 침략하고 공격해 온 반인권 국가라고 규정했다.

-짐 레프리(Jim Raffrey) 변호사(민권변호사협회 사무장)는 미 정부당국은 국내 국제사회에서 인권을 옹호하기는 커녕 인권을 유린하는 행위를 일삼아 왔기 때문에 미국에 대한 국제적, 국내적 비판이 비등해 졌다고 설명하면서 미국내 감옥에 있는 죄수들에 대한 인권유린, 국제사회에서는 전쟁범죄 행위를 하여 신용이 추락했다고 안타까와 했다. 그는 이어 북조선 인권문제도 국제사회 고위급회의라고 하면 당연히 북조선 외교관들이나 당국관계자들을 초청하여 함께 논의하여야 됨에도 불구하고 당사국 문제를 다루면서 북조선의 참가를 가로막은 미국의 자세는 비민주주의적 자세이며 반인권 행위라고 꼬집었다.

-이레나 바르자비디안(Irena Varjabedian)씨는 지금 미국은 또다시 시리아, 이라크를 공습하며 어린이들, 여성들 많은 양민들을 살해하고 건물들, 원유생산 시설들을 잔인무도하게 파괴하고 있다고 격분해 하면서 “자기들이 뭔데…누구한테 허락받고 깡패처럼 다른나라들을 마구 폭격하고 파괴하는지 이해가 가지 않는다”면서 유엔이 있는데 왜 미국이 유엔처럼 국제경찰행세를 하는지 아무리 생각해도 납득이 안간다고 격분한 어조로 말했다.

-노라 로만(Nora Lohmann)씨는 “미국은 인권국가가 아니다”라고 단정하면서 형무소에서 죄수들이 폭력을 당하고 견딜수 없어 최근에도 5백여명의 죄수들이 단식투쟁을 하며 죄수들 처우개선문제를 촉구한바 있었고, 거의 매일 총기 사건으로 시민들이 죽어가고 있고, 인종차별 및 미국내 사회 곳곳에 반인권의 사회모순들이 만연하여 있는 심각한 상황이라고 폭로했다.

-리나 마크데시(Lina Makdesi)씨는 미국 당국자들은 한때는 테리분자들을 지원하다가 그들이 반미로 돌아서면 그들을 또 적으로 몰아 살해하는 반인권행위를 자행하여 왔다는 것은 만인이 주지하는 사실이다. 이들이 국제사회, 지구촌에서 얼마나 많은 반인권 행위를 저질러 왔는가는 아는 사람들은 다 안다고 지적하며 미국을 반대하여 도전하는 세력들도 미국무기를 갖고 저항해 오고 있다. 미국의 침략행위가 사라지면 국제사회에 저항세력이 존재할 수 없다. 미국이 다른 나라들을 간섭하고 못살게 구니깐 저항세력이 생기는데 이 저항세력을 미국은 테러집단이라고 규정한다. 사실상 따지고 보면 테러집단이라고 불리우는 세력은 미국의 제국주의 세력에 대한 간섭과 지배에 항거하는 세력이라고 보아야 한다고 설명한다.

-브리이언 베퍼(Brian Becker)씨는 미국평화단체협의회(A.N.S.W.E.R.) 간사인데 그는 이날 시위에 대한 취지와 그 배경에 대해 문건으로 발표했다.

미국의 23일 이라크 공습, 24일의 시리아 공습은 전혀 설득력이 없다. 이러한 행위는 미제국주의 불법행위이며 동시에 중동의 원유이익을 챙기기 위한 수단에 불과하다고 분석하면서 ISIS 같은 것을 구실로 공습하는 것은 허위조작에 불과하다고 진단했다.

The following is a statement from Brian Becker, National Coordinator of the ANSWER Coalition:

The U.S. bombing of Syria has begun.

We in the ANSWER Coalition oppose this war and are calling for demonstrations to oppose the bombing of Syria and Iraq beginning September 23 through September 28. This war, like the earlier ones, is being sold on the basis of misinformation and fear. The United States is a major part of the problem and cannot be the solution to the current crisis in Syria and Iraq.

In Los Angeles, we will be holding an emergency rally on Wednesday, Sept. 24 starting at 5:30PM at the Westwood Federal Building, 11000 Wilshire Blvd.

This new aggression is loaded with irony. The Pentagon spokesperson says that the bombing is directed against the self-named Islamic State (ISIS) forces that have gained control over large swaths of Syria and Iraq. But it was precisely the arms transfers and funding of ISIS by the U.S. government's principal allies in the region, especially Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Qatar, that have allowed the Islamic state to grow strong in its struggle to topple the secular Syrian government led by Bashar Al-Assad.
Let's tell the fundamental truth that the Obama administration conceals from the people: the so-called Islamic State or ISIS wouldn't exist today as a major force either in Syria or Iraq if it wasn't for the U.S. military aggression that smashed the secular, nationalist governments in Iraq in 2003 and Libya in 2011, followed by the U.S. government's catastrophic support for the armed opposition against the similarly organized government in Syria.

The U.S. bombing of Syrian territory is taking place without the consent of the Syrian government. It is one more U.S. violation of international law and Syrian sovereignty. The Syrian government had offered to cooperate with the United States in a joint military struggle against the reactionary forces of ISIS. That offer has, however, been immediately and categorically rejected by all in the U.S. ruling class political circles who have already announced that the Syrian government must be destroyed. Obama and the Pentagon and the CIA and, last and least, the bribed and corrupted talking heads in Congress are determined to use the attack against the Islamic State as a pretext to carry out regime change in Syria by military means even though the Syrian government has been the most effective military force in struggling against the so-called Islamic State.

The real objectives of U.S. imperialism are to locate permanent Pentagon military bases in Iraq, Syria and the entire resource-rich region of the Middle East. This is the goal: the projection of permanent imperial power and domination in a region that contains two-thirds of the world’s oil reserves.

For the past 24 years, the United States has relentlessly bombed Iraq and now it is bombing Syria. Neither Iraq nor Syria has ever attacked the United States or its people. This enduring war against previously colonized peoples is justified with shifting and changing rationales. But it is illegal. It is an expression of modern-day imperialism. It is causing chaos and destruction in the targeted countries. And ultimately it will fail to satisfy its objectives because it is based on the fantasies of those who have become drunk on that now-familiar toxic combination of unbridled arrogance and military power.

The majority of people of the United States oppose this endless war in Iraq and now Syria. It is not in their interest. At any moment this or that poll will announce that the American people favor military action of some sort. This is paper-thin propaganda. If the country and its people were actually threatened, the Commander in Chief would not have to go on national TV and promise the people that this war will involve “no boots on the ground.” There is no clearer indication that the motivation for the new imperial war is not just flimsy but false.
